Christmas is a particularly good time to visit Colchester. The historic city centre fills with festive lights, seasonal markets and family events, while some of Colchester’s best-known attractions put on special Christmas programmes of their own.
For Christmas 2026, there is plenty happening from mid-November right through to the New Year. Whether you are planning a festive family weekend, visiting relatives, Christmas shopping or simply looking for somewhere different to spend a few winter days, this guide covers some of the best things to do in Colchester this Christmas.
Event information was checked in October 2026. Dates, prices and availability can change, so we recommend checking the official event websites linked in the references section before travelling.
Christmas in Colchester 2026 at a Glance
If you are deciding when to visit, these are some of the main dates to add to your Christmas calendar:
- 14 November 2026: Colchester Christmas Light Switch-On Parade
- 21 November 2026 to 17 January 2027: Jack and the Beanstalk at the Mercury Theatre
- Selected dates from 21 November to 24 December: Magic of Christmas and The Santa Experience at Colchester Zoological Society
- Selected dates from 27 November to 28 December: Enchanted Trail of Light at Colchester Zoological Society
- 5 December 2026 to 3 January 2027: Christmas ice rink at Culver Square
- 6 December 2026: Colchester Christmas Market
- 9 December 2026: Colchester Castle Christmas Open Evening
There are plenty of smaller events taking place alongside these dates too, including festive performances, Father Christmas experiences, workshops and guided tours. Visit Colchester is maintaining a dedicated Christmas events guide throughout the festive season. [1]
1. Watch the Colchester Christmas Light Switch-On Parade
Colchester’s festive season officially gets under way on Saturday 14 November 2026 with the annual Christmas Light Switch-On Parade. The parade is due to begin at 5pm from the Mercury Theatre before travelling through the High Street as the city’s Christmas lights are illuminated. [2]
This year’s event has a strong community focus, with hundreds of participants from local groups expected to take part. Visitors can expect illuminated costumes, festive characters, music and performances as the procession makes its way through the city centre towards Firstsite.
If you are visiting Colchester for the weekend, it is a good opportunity to arrive earlier in the day, explore the shops and historic centre, stop for something to eat and then find a position along the parade route before 5pm. As with most city-centre Christmas events, expect the central streets to be busier than usual.
2. See Jack and the Beanstalk at the Mercury Theatre
A Christmas trip is not quite complete without a pantomime, and the Mercury Theatre has a suitably festive production lined up for 2026.
Jack and the Beanstalk runs from 21 November 2026 until 17 January 2027, making it an option for visitors throughout December as well as those planning a post-Christmas or New Year stay. [3]
The production brings together the traditional panto ingredients of comedy, music, choreography, colourful sets and plenty of audience participation. It is particularly well suited to families looking for an indoor activity during a winter afternoon or evening.
The Mercury is also hosting a Santa’s Grotto during December, so families visiting with younger children may be able to combine the two depending on performance and grotto availability.
3. Spend a Festive Day at Colchester Zoological Society
One of Colchester’s biggest attractions gets a Christmas makeover on selected dates during November and December. The Magic of Christmas takes place on selected weekends from 21 November, followed by dates throughout December up to Christmas Eve. [4]
Rather than simply visiting the zoo as you would at another time of year, these dates add festive activities to the normal daytime experience. It can therefore work particularly well if you are visiting Colchester with children and want an activity capable of filling a substantial part of the day.
There is also a separate Santa Experience. Children journey through a woodland setting, visit Mrs Claus’ Kitchen, encounter singing reindeer and explore a Christmas village before meeting Father Christmas. The Santa Experience requires an additional pre-booked ticket and is not automatically included with general zoo admission. [5]
Because the Christmas events run on selected dates rather than every day, this is one attraction where it is particularly important to plan your visit before choosing your travel dates.
4. Walk Through the Enchanted Trail of Light
If you would rather visit after dark, Colchester Zoological Society is also bringing back its Enchanted Trail of Light for Christmas 2026.
The evening attraction runs on 15 selected dates between 27 November and 28 December and is separate from the normal daytime zoo experience. Visitors follow a dedicated illuminated route featuring light installations, music, special effects and festive displays. [6]
The trail takes roughly an hour and a half to complete and advance booking is required for a timed arrival slot. It is worth understanding that this is a light-trail experience rather than an evening zoo visit, so the normal animal exhibits are not the focus.
For families spending several nights in Colchester, one option would be to visit the zoo during the daytime on a separate day and save the light trail for an evening. That avoids trying to fit too much into a single visit.
5. Go Ice Skating at Culver Square
One of the biggest additions to Christmas in Colchester for 2026 is a covered real-ice skating rink at Culver Square. It is scheduled to run from Saturday 5 December 2026 until Sunday 3 January 2027. [7]
The covered rink means skating should not be entirely dependent on the British winter weather, and its central location makes it easy to combine with shopping, food and other attractions around Colchester city centre.
Push-along penguins are expected to be available for younger or less confident skaters, with skating lessons also planned. If you are visiting at a busy point in December, booking a session in advance is sensible rather than relying on availability after you arrive.
It could also work nicely as an early evening activity before dinner or a theatre performance, particularly if you are planning an overnight stay rather than trying to see Colchester in a single day.
6. Browse Colchester Christmas Market
If Christmas shopping is part of the trip, plan your visit around Sunday 6 December 2026. Colchester Christmas Market is set to return to the pedestrianised High Street from 10am to 5pm, with up to 80 stalls expected. [8]
The market is free to attend and is expected to bring together local traders, festive gifts, food and seasonal entertainment. There will also be a Christmas Gift Market inside the historic Moot Hall at Colchester Town Hall, giving visitors an indoor option as part of the same day out.
This could be one of the strongest weekends for a dedicated Christmas break in Colchester. The new Culver Square ice rink opens on Saturday 5 December, while the main Christmas Market follows on Sunday 6 December. The Mercury Theatre pantomime, Father Christmas experiences and other festive attractions are running over the same weekend.
7. Meet Father Christmas at Colchester Castle
Meeting Father Christmas inside one of England’s most historic castles gives Colchester’s festive programme a setting you will struggle to replicate elsewhere.
Father Christmas will be appearing at Colchester Castle on selected dates from 5 to 23 December 2026. Children can visit the grotto, meet Father Christmas and his helpers and receive a festive gift. Sessions are bookable and take place alongside a visit to the Castle. [9]
It means families can combine the Christmas experience with learning about Colchester’s Roman and Norman history rather than planning a trip solely around a Santa visit.
There is another reason to visit the Castle on Wednesday 9 December. Its Christmas Open Evening runs from 3pm to 8pm and offers free admission to the Castle, festive decorations and refreshments. An optional Father Christmas visit is also available for an additional charge. [10]
8. Discover Colchester’s Christmas Past on a Guided Tour
Colchester is Britain’s first recorded city, so not every festive activity needs to revolve around markets and Christmas lights. On 5 December 2026, Visit Colchester is running its themed A Colchester Christmas guided tour. [11]
The walk explores streets and buildings around the city centre while sharing stories about Christmas in Colchester through the years. It is a good option for couples, adult visitors or families with older children who want to learn more about the city rather than simply moving between attractions.
It can also be paired with the opening weekend of the Culver Square ice rink, giving you a mix of local history during the day and a more traditional festive activity afterwards.
9. Enjoy a Christmas Show at Colchester Arts Centre
For something a little different from the main pantomime, Colchester Arts Centre has its own varied festive programme during December. Events scheduled for 2026 include family theatre, seasonal music and alternative Christmas entertainment. [12]
One of the venue’s Christmas traditions is A Christmas Carol by Candlelight, with performances scheduled for 23 and 24 December. There are also performances of The Elves and the Shoemaker in the run-up to Christmas, making the Arts Centre another useful option if you are visiting with children.
If your stay extends to Christmas Eve, a candlelit performance of Dickens’ Christmas story could be an atmospheric way to finish your visit.
A Christmas Weekend in Colchester: How to Plan Your Trip
If you want to experience several events without rushing, the weekend of 5 and 6 December 2026 is particularly attractive.
On the Saturday, you could explore the historic centre, join the Christmas-themed guided tour, visit Father Christmas at Colchester Castle and book a skating session at the new Culver Square ice rink. In the evening, you could see Jack and the Beanstalk at the Mercury Theatre or head to the Enchanted Trail of Light.
On Sunday, the Colchester Christmas Market takes over the High Street, with the Moot Hall Christmas Gift Market providing another place to browse. You could then finish your weekend with another festive attraction or enjoy a quieter evening back at your accommodation.
Families with younger children may prefer to spread the bigger attractions across two or three days. A full zoo visit, city-centre Christmas events and an evening light trail can quickly become a long day, particularly in December when daylight hours are shorter.

Tips for Visiting Colchester at Christmas
December weekends can become busy, so booking the headline attractions before travelling will give you much more freedom when planning the rest of your stay. This is particularly important for timed experiences such as the zoo’s Enchanted Trail of Light, Father Christmas visits, ice skating and theatre performances.
It is also worth leaving some time unplanned. Colchester’s historic centre is compact enough to explore between booked activities, so you can stop for food, look around the shops, walk through Castle Park or simply enjoy the Christmas lights without having to follow a rigid itinerary.
If you are driving, check parking arrangements and any temporary road restrictions before heading into the centre, particularly for major events such as the light switch-on and Christmas Market.
