Winter changes the pace of Brentwood, but it certainly does not bring the town to a standstill. From Christmas markets and festive theatre to underground attractions, woodland walks and cosy indoor activities, there are plenty of things to do in Brentwood when the temperature drops.
If you are planning a winter weekend, visiting family over Christmas or spending a few days in Essex for work, Brentwood is particularly convenient because you can combine town-centre activities with countryside and family attractions nearby. Many of the biggest Christmas events are also free to attend.
This guide covers some of the best things to do in Brentwood in winter, including confirmed Christmas 2026 events, New Year’s Eve ideas and attractions that remain worth visiting well into January and February.
Christmas and Winter Events in Brentwood for 2026
If your visit falls between late October and Christmas, it is worth checking your dates before you arrive. Brentwood and the surrounding villages have a busy festive calendar in 2026.
- 31 October and 1 November: Essex Festive Gift & Food Show at the Brentwood Centre, with more than 250 exhibitors. [1]
- 6 to 8 November: Winter Lights Express at Barnards Farm, featuring an illuminated miniature railway journey and lit sculptures. [2]
- 21 November: Lighting Up Brentwood, including live entertainment, market stalls, food, rides, a Santa Parade and the Christmas light switch-on. [3]
- 29 November: Ingatestone Festive Fair, with Christmas market stalls, entertainment, live music and a Christmas Toy Trail. [3]
- 6 December: Festive Shenfield, with entertainment, funfair rides, traditional Christmas stalls, food and live music. [3]
- 10 to 24 December: The Elves and the Shoemaker Christmas Musical at Brentwood Theatre. [4]
- 19 December: December Local Artisan Market at the Baytree Shopping Centre. [5]
1. Experience Lighting Up Brentwood
If you are only going to choose one festive event in the town itself, Lighting Up Brentwood is an excellent place to start. The 2026 event takes place on Saturday 21 November from 12pm until 6pm on Brentwood High Street, with free entry. [3]
This is much more than simply watching the Christmas lights come on. The programme includes live performances across several stages, market stalls, festive food and drink, gifts, funfair rides, walkabout entertainment and a Santa Parade before the lights are switched on. [3]
It works particularly well for families with children, but couples and groups can just as easily use it as the start of a festive evening in Brentwood. Arrive during the afternoon to browse the stalls and stay as daylight fades and the High Street begins to light up.
Our apartments at Library House are in central Brentwood, making them a convenient base if you want to enjoy the town centre without having to plan a long journey back afterwards.
2. Visit Ingatestone Festive Fair
Brentwood’s wider borough is also worth exploring during the festive season. On Sunday 29 November, Ingatestone hosts its annual Festive Fair from 12pm until 5pm. [3]
Expect a traditional Christmas atmosphere rather than a huge commercial event. There are stalls selling food, drinks, gifts and handmade products alongside live music, festive entertainment and activities from local businesses. A Christmas Toy Trail adds something extra for younger visitors.
Ingatestone’s historic High Street and independent shops make it a pleasant place to spend a winter afternoon, particularly if you prefer smaller local events to large shopping centres.
3. Spend a Festive Sunday in Shenfield
A week later, on Sunday 6 December, the seasonal programme moves to Hutton Road for Festive Shenfield. Running from 12pm to 5pm, the free event combines traditional market stalls with food, drink, live music, funfair rides and walkabout entertainment. [3]
Shenfield is close enough to Brentwood to make this an easy addition to a winter break rather than a separate trip. You could spend the morning in Brentwood, head to Shenfield for the event in the afternoon and return to your apartment in the evening.
4. See a Christmas Show at Brentwood Theatre
Cold and wet evening? Brentwood Theatre gives you a good excuse to stay indoors.
For Christmas 2026, the theatre’s programme includes The Elves and the Shoemaker Christmas Musical, beginning on 10 December. The venue has also scheduled seasonal favourites including The Muppets Christmas Carol on 16 December and It’s a Wonderful Life on 17 December. [4]
This makes the theatre particularly useful for a winter itinerary because it works whether you are visiting as a couple, with friends or with children. Rather than depending entirely on the weather, you can book an evening performance in advance and build the rest of your day around it.
5. Take the Children to A Christmas Journey at Old MacDonald’s Farm
Families staying in Brentwood over the festive season have another substantial Christmas attraction just outside the town centre.
Old MacDonald’s Farm runs its A Christmas Journey event during the run-up to Christmas. The 2026 programme includes appearances from Santa, festive characters, Christmas arts and crafts, a Christmas parade, seasonal shows, a festive train ride and access to many of the farm’s usual attractions. [6]
The farm also has indoor soft play, which is particularly useful when Essex delivers one of those cold, damp December days when spending hours outdoors suddenly seems less appealing. [7]
It is one of the strongest options in the area for families with younger children and can comfortably fill a large part of the day.
6. Start Christmas Early at the Essex Festive Gift & Food Show
Winter festivities begin early at the Brentwood Centre in 2026. The Essex Festive Gift & Food Show takes place on 31 October and 1 November and features more than 250 exhibitors across the event. [1]
You can browse Christmas gifts, artisan products and seasonal food while enjoying live music and festive photo opportunities. As much of the event is under cover, it is also a useful option if you are visiting just as the weather begins to turn colder.
For anyone who likes getting their Christmas shopping done before December arrives, this could be one of the most useful dates in the Brentwood winter calendar.
7. Ride the Winter Lights Express at Barnards Farm
One of the more unusual early-winter events near Brentwood is the Winter Lights Express at Barnards Farm in West Horndon.
Running from 6 to 8 November 2026, the experience includes a miniature railway journey through the gardens while sculptures are illuminated after dark. Visitors can also follow a woodland walk towards the lakes and see more of the lit displays around the grounds. Pre-booking is required. [2]
It is a good choice for couples looking for something a little different as well as families wanting an evening activity outside the usual Christmas market format.
8. Explore the Secret Nuclear Bunker
Not every good winter attraction needs tinsel.
For something completely different, travel to Kelvedon Hatch and descend into one of the most unusual historic attractions in Essex. The Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker is a huge underground Cold War complex that was designed to function as a regional government headquarters in the event of nuclear war. [8]
The self-guided tour takes visitors deep underground through rooms once intended for government personnel and emergency operations. It is an especially good choice when the weather makes a country walk less tempting.
Unlike some seasonal attractions, the bunker remains available through the colder months. From November until the end of February it is normally open Thursday to Sunday from 10am until 4pm, with additional opening during some school holiday periods. [8]
9. Take on an Escape Room at Clue HQ Brentwood
Another reliable rainy-day option is Clue HQ Brentwood in Kelvedon Hatch.
The escape rooms place teams inside themed scenarios where you have 60 minutes to solve puzzles, decipher clues and find your way out. Current rooms include Bunker 38, A Magical Disappearance, Dungeon of Doom and Sacrifice. [9]
Games are suitable for couples, groups and families with older children. Clue HQ states that children over seven can take part, although younger players may find some puzzles difficult, and visitors under 16 need a participating adult. [10]
It is a particularly useful option for a winter weekend because you can reserve a session in advance rather than waiting to see what the weather does.
10. Wrap Up for a Winter Walk at Weald Country Park
A clear, crisp winter morning can be one of the nicest times to explore the Essex countryside, and you do not have to travel far from Brentwood town centre to find it.
Weald Country Park covers more than 500 acres of woodland, lakes, meadows and open grassland. Wildlife includes fallow deer and a variety of water birds, and the park is open every day from 8am until dusk throughout 2026. [11]
Winter visits tend to feel quieter than summer weekends. Put on walking boots, take a warm coat and plan a morning walk before heading back into Brentwood for lunch or an afternoon indoor activity.
Families can also look for the Stick Man play trail, giving younger visitors something to follow while adults enjoy the landscape.
11. Search for the Gruffalo at Thorndon Country Park
Thorndon Country Park is another good family option when the weather is cold but dry.
The woodland is home to the self-guided Gruffalo Trail, where children can search for handcrafted carvings of characters from Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s story. No booking is required and the trail paths are suitable for buggies. [12]
The Nature Discovery Centre remains open during winter too, with published winter opening hours of 10am to 4pm between 1 November and 15 February. [13]
It gives families a useful middle ground between a full indoor attraction and a long countryside hike.
12. Spend a Cold Afternoon Shopping in Central Brentwood
You do not need a major attraction planned for every hour of a winter break. Central Brentwood is easy to explore at a slower pace, with shops, cafés and restaurants providing plenty of places to escape the cold.
The Baytree Shopping Centre also hosts seasonal events. Its current 2026 programme includes an Essex Art Market on 5 December and a December Local Artisan Market on 19 December, giving you another opportunity to find locally made gifts in the weeks before Christmas. [5]
Combining some shopping with coffee, lunch and a walk beneath the Christmas lights makes a relaxed option for the afternoon before an evening meal or theatre performance.
13. Visit Brentwood Cathedral
For a quieter change of pace, Brentwood Cathedral is one of the town’s most distinctive buildings and is well worth stepping inside.
The Cathedral Church of St Mary and St Helen combines an earlier Gothic church with a much larger classical building completed in the early 1990s. It regularly hosts music, concerts and services, with additional worship taking place during the Christmas period. [14]
Even if you are not attending a service, it offers an interesting architectural contrast to Brentwood’s shops and modern attractions. If you are visiting over Christmas, check the cathedral’s current programme before your stay as service and music schedules can change from year to year.
New Year’s Eve in Brentwood
Brentwood does not suddenly go quiet after Christmas Day. If you are staying over New Year’s Eve, there are several ways to see in 2027.
For a late-night option, Sugar Hut has advertised a New Year’s Eve event for 31 December 2026, with DJs and an evening running into the early hours. [15] Visitors looking for something more focused on food can instead consider a New Year’s Eve meal. The George & Dragon in Brentwood is offering a dedicated evening set menu on 31 December. [16]
New Year’s Eve events can sell out, so this is one part of a winter trip that is worth arranging before you arrive rather than deciding on the night.
What About Brentwood After Christmas?
One reason we have not made this guide entirely about Christmas is that Brentwood remains a useful destination once the decorations begin to disappear.
January and February are good months for quieter walks around Weald and Thorndon, while attractions such as the Secret Nuclear Bunker and Clue HQ give you options when the weather is poor. Brentwood’s cafés, restaurants and shops also mean you can build a relaxed weekend without needing a packed programme of seasonal events.
If the forecast is good, spend the morning outdoors and save an indoor attraction for later in the day. If heavy rain arrives, reverse the plan. Having a mixture of booked and flexible activities makes winter trips considerably easier.

Tips for Visiting Brentwood in Winter
- Book major festive attractions early. Theatre performances, Christmas attractions and New Year’s Eve events can have limited capacity.
- Keep one flexible day. Save country parks for dry weather and use attractions such as the bunker, theatre or escape rooms when rain arrives.
- Check opening hours before travelling. Winter hours are often shorter, particularly once Christmas and New Year have passed.
